Yuan Class Submarine - It is the backbone of the Chinese Navy's Submarine Forces (PLAN). Yuan Class with AIP installed now look for another important update. The latest version, which was first seen in May this year, may show that the PLAN is re-engaging with advanced submarine technology. It is also a sign that they are innovating and going their own way.
Few details have emerged about the latest iteration, dubbed the Type-039C by Western analysts. What is clear is that it is very different from the previous version, and is capable of definition. I did a 'what we know' article for Naval News. This article is very in-depth and includes more insight.
Yuan Class Submarine
The exterior of the new boat features a distinctive new sail with a belt running along the top for a stealthy look. This is similar to the Swedish A-26 design. But the similarity is only superficial. Other improvements, perhaps more consequential, include an integrated towed array and possibly a new anechoic coating.

When it first appeared in Chinese ports in 2006, the Type-039A Yuan Class submarine caused quite a stir. Firstly because it is clearly more modern than the previous class of music, and secondly because it is not predictable. China has repeatedly reminded us that China has the ability to build submarines without a builder. Watch the West in advance. Other countries generally cannot build such stealthy submarines, which in part makes Chinese submarines more attractive. In May 2021 they did it again with this latest version.
The sign of the yuan converter is unclear. Western analysts have resorted to speculation as reliable Chinese sources have yet to officially confirm the line. Generally however three main iterations of the class can be distinguished by sail. The original Type-039A had clean upright sails with vertical cross-edges. Overall, this ship clearly shows the influence of KILO in Russia by China. After that, around 2013, additional curved sails were seen with the combination of the leading edge ('cusp'). This is designated as Type-039B. Note that the modern 'A' has become 'AGs', and there is some confusion over the definition. Most observers prefer the Type-039D, but the new submarine will become the Type-039C.
However, Yuan's ability in ancient Chinese design is appreciated. Fair congratulations. In recent years, as China is busy with exports, this plan is a little less. Customers so far are Pakistan (8) and Thailand (1). In the process, a number of cutting models appeared in the open defense show. Reveal the overall style. It is a three-level boat with Stirling generator type AIP (also spelled Air Independent Power).
How India Lags China In Submarine Race
Although we are not yet aware of internal changes. The basic hull appears to be the same size. We also know that the weapon is somehow loaded/unloaded via a pair of upper torpedo tubes, similar to earlier Yuan and Song class ships. This is a strong indicator that internal management is largely unchanged.
However, Yatra pointed out that surface raiding has been an important point for the plan. This may involve a long journey in and out of port. Or it could mean focusing on special forces that submarines may sometimes be exposed to, but there is no supporting evidence for this.
Similarities to the Swedish A-26 Blekinge class submarines are often overstated. While they are linked by the chind top sail concept, the actual hydrodynamic configuration is quite different. Chinese boats have a less integrated bottom and water jets (water jets) are installed differently
More specifically, China tested this type of angular ship in the Ming-035 submarine around 2010. This is just the upper part of the ship (Mings have a very old-fashioned hull design with a small upper part around the periscope).
Is Indian Navy's Submarine Development Losing Edge Over Pakistan?
The Type-035 Ming Class submarines have expired before hitting the water. However, similar to Yuan's latest ship, at least one ship was modified to have a chin in 2010.
The rear tube, more angled than its predecessor, has been extended aft to accommodate the sonar array (TAS). This is removed through the enlarged upper steering structure. This capability, which seemed to be missing in previous versions, could be a huge leap forward. That can make them a very powerful anti-submarine platform.
Another subtle change is what appears to be a new anechoic coating on the top of the sails and tube. The rubber tiles previously seen on yuan coins seem to have disappeared, although they are still used on the underside. The coating looks rubbery and a bit uneven.
We can speculate about the adoption of new technologies. The ship is in the same location, and has the same overall size as the previous ship. So, although optronic masts can be added, it is unlikely to be eradicated from existing ships.
Essay: Inside The Design Of China's Yuan Class Submarine
The biggest question mark has to do with motivation. Yuan Sterling generator type AIP features. It is possible that an AIP fuel cell will be used, but as the overall size of the hull appears unchanged, I think this is unlikely. Similarly, there is speculation about lithium-ion battery technology, but again there is no evidence for this.

The torpedo room is located on deck. This may mean that the curve of the hull reduces the total armament to 16, although 18 are usually reported. (I use 18 as an assumption of the world ranking of submarine weapon loading).
Primarily, weapons may include anti-ship missiles, with attack ships being its main mission. Anti-ship weapons are believed to include the latest YJ-18B anti-ship missiles. It has a relatively long length, perhaps 290 nautical miles. The Exocet can also carry the same YJ-82 weapon as the submarine launched. This has a very short range of about 20 nautical miles, but keep in mind that long-range missiles require targeting outside the ship.

Torpedoes may include both the Yu-6 thermal energy torpedo and the electric energy type (plans unknown). Both weapons are dual purpose weapons (anti-ship, anti-submarine) and quite sophisticated. Bottom mines are also believed to be a standard part of the PLAN submarine arsenal.

The total value of the US DoD in 2025, excluding export models, is expected to be 42 yuan. If so, maybe 20-25 new models.
However, it is currently unclear whether this is intended for production, or perhaps for research and development. Some speculate that it may be a rebuilt old ship. It seems possible, but I think it's less likely. However, for the discussion to be useful in informing national policy makers and citizens, the content must be based on accurate data and sound analysis. Unfortunately, when reporting in English on the People's Liberation Army (PLAN), both seem to be necessary. A recent USNI article continues this trend. In the article, Henry Holst argued that the 039A/B Yuan-class submarines "are primarily designed as an anti-ship missile (ASCM) system that can stay submerged for extended periods of time in inaccessible shallow trenches."

The "small" size, air-independent power system (AIP) and long-range ASCM capabilities make it suitable for operations in shallow, coastal waters. While I wholeheartedly agree that the Type 039A/B is a good anti-surface platform, the main point of the article's argument is largely based on misinformation. This rebuttal examines the main points of the essay's argument and shows type 039 A/B.
In fact, open ocean submarines are designed to meet the PLAN's close-to-sea mobility defense requirements in their maritime strategy and are not ships primarily to operate in Taiwan's coastal waters.
The conclusion of the text argues that the class is a small submarine, designed to operate in shallow waters. A key point used to support this position is comparison
"Draft" of 10.3 meters. This number is very doubtful. When the submarine's draft exceeds its beam, you may want to check your data. The 10.3m figure is not a Soryu-class draft. Rather, it is the submarine's "depth" — the vertical distance from its keel, to the top of the freeboard deck, measured from the midpoint of the ship's length.
