Shortages of most common calibers have been widespread for several months, and the basic law of supply and demand is felt throughout the industry. Demand goes up, supply goes down, so costs go up. Unfortunately, 2020 witnessed a perfect storm of logistical, social and political pressures that placed unsustainable pressure on virtually every ammunition manufacturer operating in the US market. At the time of writing, even the cheapest armor-piercing .223 ammo was often selling for more than the $0.60 price per round—and even then it sold out quickly.

Many companies have been forced to initiate price increases over the past year or so, and contrary to popular rumor, these increases are not a matter of cutting corners. In most, if not all, cases this is unfortunately necessary to maintain production levels that are still possible. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much light yet to be seen at the end of the tunnel. On March 22, 2021, Winchester and Browning Ammunition released the following announcement detailing a series of upcoming price increases effective May 1.

March 22, 2021 To all Winchester Ammo customers: Thank you for your commitment to Winchester Ammunition and Browning in supporting our legendary product. Due to increased input costs for ammunition production, ammunition prices will have to increase for all deliveries, including backorders, from and including 1 May 2021. Ammunition will be subject to a subsequent price increase. Shotshells +5%-12% 22 Magnum Rimfire Ammo +10% Hunting Rifle Ammo +5%-15% All FMJ Centerfire Rifle Ammo +8% All Centerfire Pistol Ammo +8% Components +10% Primary +25% (Due to our situation current backorders, until further notice Winchester is not accepting new orders on primary) This increase on May 1, 2021 will affect all pack sizes3, sub-brands and custom makeup. All existing and future orders shipped on or after May 1, 2021 will ship at the new price unless you notify us to request a cancellation. The procedure for refund pricing and future orders will be published with a new price list and program in the coming weeks.
To put these supply chain issues into perspective: during the recent SHOT Virtual 2021 Show, Winchester said that if they stopped taking all new orders for the .22LR immediately, it would take them about two years to fill all existing orders. In its November quarterly earnings update, CEO Chris Metz of Vista Outdoors (parent company of several major ammunition manufacturers, including Federal, CCI, Speer and Remington) said, “
We currently have more than one year worth of ammunition orders in excess of $1 billion. With demand far outstripping supply and inventory levels in the channel at an all-time low, we continue to see strong demand, and these metrics inform our perspective on what a recovery or normalization might look like.
In short, unfortunately, it seems we have no choice but to continue incurring higher ammunition costs until further notice. It's time to tighten up your dry fire training, use low round drills, and maybe invest in some laser training systems like the Mantis X or Strikeman options. See you at the selection!
