Winchester 1300 Hunting - While browsing my favorite online gun store, I spotted a cool old Winchester 1300 Defender. I was given a Westchester Model 1200 "riot gun" in 1980 and I remember it being a good, slick gun. The 1200 was also a military issue back in the day and saw combat duty in Vietnam
I bought a 1300 on short order. Mine is a 12 gauge with a standard length sporting magazine tube, an 18 ½" "Defender" marked barrel and useful wood stock. It is equipped with a marked all steel +2 extension which has proven completely reliable in use Per Winchester, my 1300 is manufactured in 1990

That afternoon my wife and I shot clay birds. The 1300 is light and fast in the hand and a natural pointer from the hip or shoulder As long as I shot the clays quickly, my hit rate with the 1300 was close to 100%. The Winnipeg pads worked surprisingly well and this gun doesn't punish at all

I sampled 1300 at 25 yards with an 11×17 steel plate. This is one Universal #8 round, one Federal 2 3/4" Magnum 00 barrel, and one Super X Slug. Good spread with birdshot, 9 balcut on the plate, and only a couple of inches pressed into the slug bead, although I stretched it a bit.
The old bead on this gun was more pumpkin shaped than round, so I dug out my 3-56 bead to find a replacement. I originally tried the Bradley, but it was so big that my slug group grew at 100 yards. I also went from not being able to miss a target bird with it to missing them half the time I found a nice round 1/8 inch silver bead in the parts drawer and swapped out the Bradley for it.
Time to check the results... this target represents 1 round of #8 Universal and 1 round of Remington #0 12 pellet buckshot at 25 yards. This time I used a Remington 2 3/4" slug; at 25, 50 and 100 yards Then I fired a shot from the pasture in 196ga I held the can for 6 hours without thinking and it landed below the paper to the left We don't usually think about a bead sight gun with such a wide reach but you can be sure that someone on two football fields will give you hell.
The 1300 series has some The Dispatcher advertised the 1300 as a "velocity pump" because it had a rotating bolt that opened when fired and if you held the front slightly the action would open and fire. The temptation is to push it forward; But if the leading edge isn't pulled to the rear end, you'll end up with a short stroke empty chamber. Forget the hype and use the 1300 like any other pump gun

Another 1300 gremlins appeared in this shotgun double feed If this accident finds you, place the gun in a safe place, point it in a safe direction and remove the pin securing the trigger assembly. Remove it and remove the function from the bottom Double feed occurs when the primary cell stop leaves the cell on the platform and the secondary cell stop cannot handle the remaining shell in the magazine. This is easily corrected by adjusting the hook of the secondary stop to center the bullet; And work well with it Why did Winnipeg choose to bolt it to the trigger assembly instead of bolting it to the receiver slot (870, 500)? It was a recipe for failure with the next frosting the gremlin offered
Remington mates the magazine tube to the 870 receiver and I've long hated them for it. Mossberg fixes it by threading it into the receiver At 1:00 PM the Winster was pressed into the receiver using a plastic "leaf cucumber". When the 14th century began, the plastics were almost uncurable until 10-12 years later So the 1300 journal is fragile They also have the complex front end of the shell stops mentioned above; So a break in the magazine neck becomes a big deal I should also mention that Winchester hasn't made a 1300 in 10 years and they don't make replacement parts. If you get stuck and need parts, Midwest Gunworks is a factory recommended supplier that also has magazines. I can only order it in hand
I think 1200-1300 Winnipeg was too weak for military or police matters. This doesn't really rule them out as hunting or home defense guns They are light weight, handle well and have very smart functions They especially like the stock I find them very comfortable to shoot and work with This 1300 throws excellent patterns for duty/defense guns and from their spartan sights however, it is deadly with snails. It needs a little TLC, I can do that I like it and hope it finds a home here. Why the Winchester 1300 is a classic: Hank Williams Jr. "I got a gun and a rifle and a four-wheel drive and a country for a boy to live in," the old song told us. "
Yes, I have guns and rifles, but I no longer have a quad pickup truck - I traded it when I moved from Texas to Washington D.C. this year. The urban areas of the East Coast have too much traffic, too narrow roads and too many pedestrians for a big truck to handle - so I'm not a country boy anymore.

But Williams is right: you can use many different gun styles and solve most of your needs with just deer rifles and shotguns. Let's Make Up Country Music and Talk My Distinctive 1300 12 Gauge Shotgun. Why shoot? My experience with Bich 1300
My Distortion 1300 is a "speed pump" style with brown synthetic stock and a pump. The gun is in a traditional hunting configuration (not intended for home defense) and does not have a rear sight. The 1300 comes in home defense mode, which is smaller with front and rear sights. The Winchester 1300 Coastal Marine Edition features a corrosion-resistant finish, a 7-round magazine, and a fiber optic front sight.
I bought my Vichi 1300 in the late 1990s, originally for turkey hunting in West Virginia. Unfortunately, I never bagged a banana in the Mountain State after several attempts. But I have taken several deer in two different states with the Winnipeg 1300
Now I know what you're thinking: Why am I taking a gun to hunt deer? One reason is the rules of the game. There are only ten states that allow firearms for deer hunting -- many of them in the Midwest, such as Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio and Minnesota. Of those states, southern Illinois is one area where I have successfully hunted deer with my Winchester 1300. In 2023, Illinois will begin allowing hunters to use high-powered rifles in various calibers.

Another reason I hunt deer with a gun that doesn't have a rear sight is that I find it more fun and challenging. The maximum effective range is only 50-100 meters You will have to wait until you borrow the technique used by bowhunters to cover your scent and reduce noise. Hunters need to be accurate when using a 12 gauge slug for the first cold barrel shot, and you need to be quick with the follow up shot if you need it. West Virginians love their deer rifles
Some states do not allow deer hunting with guns. This is especially true in West Virginia When I first hunted deer there my friends made fun of me In fact they won't let me go in the field with my 1300 I had to borrow a rifle before I could hunt because I had left my deer rifle at home. I know you're always prepared and take a deer rifle with you when you go hunting, but I think a shotgun is more of a game. I still hunt deer with a gun in Illinois and Kentucky in West Virginia I went to a deer rifle
Another reason to hunt with a gun is safety. Rifle bullets can travel miles, so if you are hunting in an area with a house, using a deer rifle is dangerous. Hunters need a safe cover You really don't want to take an errant shot that could hurt someone A deer slug loses its power after 100 meters, so it doesn't pose the same danger to those living in the house as a rifle normally would. I am currently hunting my deer in Kentucky and the land I use has a lot of houses This prevents me from using a high powered rifle
I love my Winchester 1300 but my one complaint is the reassembly. Easy to dismantle, but easy to rebuild
