Military Family Separation Pay - A service member with dependents who are on an unaccompanied tour of duty or away from home may be entitled to a Family Separation Allowance (FSA) of up to $250 per month.
FSA accrues from the date of departure from home location and ends on the day prior to arrival at home location. This is in addition to per diem or other entitlements.

Fort Riley, Kan. -- Financial rules can change when soldiers deploy, where they go, and if they leave family behind. It helps to navigate those changes and understand how they impact downstream. Sometimes when balanced with living expenses away from home, extra pay is not expected.

Military Pay Transition
"It's a hardship for them," said Ronald Eiler, a financial counselor with the Community Services Financial Readiness Program. "They're put in a position they wouldn't normally be in and they have additional costs."
Eiler explained that the rights that soldiers receive vary by location. These include Assignment Incentives, Hardship Duty Payment and Family Separation Allowance.
Assignment incentives are for soldiers in harsh environments such as field duty. If their status is in a field duty station they are paid an additional $195 per month.
The payment of hardship duty also depends on the duty station. If a soldier in Atlantic Resolve goes to a location like Latvia, Hungary, Bulgaria or Romania, they will receive up to $50 extra per month depending on living conditions. Those on the Atlantic Resolve going to Poland will not receive Hardship Duty Pay. Soldiers moving into the U.S. Central Command's area of responsibility also receive a hardship duty payment.
Can Military Members Date Each Other?
Family Separation Allowance is for soldiers who lived with dependents prior to deployment. Severance pay is $250 per month or a prorated amount of $8.33 per day.
Roger Vanderlinde, a quality review technician for the Defense Forces Pay Office, said deploying Soldiers is an authorized special leave accrual. This means that they will not lose more than 60 days of leave and can carry it over to the next financial year.

Vanderlinde of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team said critical units were at a standstill because they had no access to food other than what was provided. They will also get AIP and, if applicable, Family Separation Allowance. The hardship duty fee depends on the location.
At Fort Riley And Elsewhere, Entitlements Can Vary Based On Location
Soldiers of the 1st Combat Aviation Corps also move into critical unit chaos. Depending on location, soldiers may also receive hardship duty pay. They will get AIP. Soldiers with dependents will receive family separation pay after the first 30 days.
Soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Corps retain BAS and receive hardship duty pay, casualty pay, family separation allowance -- if applicable -- and are in tax-exempt status. They don't get AIP.
During these meetings, members of the 9th Financial Management Support Unit provide information on entitlements specific to their tour of duty.
